Hiking Hounds

One of our most popular volunteer activities is our Hiking Hounds program!  Volunteers take our most energetic shelter dogs on hikes as part of our enrichment programming.  There are no prerequisites and participants are not required to be current volunteers.  If you love hiking in the great outdoors with dogs who are excited to be out of the shelter for a while, this is the activity for you!

Community Solutions Ambassador Class

If you are interested in learning more about how Asheville Humane Society helps animals and their people in our community, this is the class for you!  The Community Solutions Ambassador Class is designed to give volunteers the basic information needed to represent this important program to the general public both on our campus and out in the community.  Volunteers will learn basic guidelines and information about Community Solutions and what our outreach means to the community. 

Feline Fundamentals Class

Get ready to be hands-on with our feline friends!  This class is required before current volunteers are able to interact with cats and kittens at the Adoption Center.  Prerequisites: completion of basic service requirements.

Pooch Essentials Class

Get ready to be hands-on with our canine friends!  This class is required before current volunteers are able to interact with dogs and puppies at the Adoption Center.  Prerequisites: completion of basic service requirements.

Feline Body Language Class

Learn all about what cats are telling us through non-verbal communication!  This class explores the various expressions of our feline friends and also shows how your body language can influence their reactions to you.  The material is great for your volunteer and foster work and for your interactions with any cats you may encounter every day!

Wallflower Workshop

Join us as we teach our most timid canine residents that people are fun!  During the Wallflower Workshop, Canine T.E.A.M. members reinforce social behaviors in dogs who need that extra boost in confidence.  Think treats, treats, and more treats!

Prerequisites include attendance at a Volunteer and Foster Information Session, completion of basic service requirements, attendance at Pooch Essentials, Canine Body Language, and Canine T.E.A.M. Training.

Weekly Wallflower Workshops are scheduled for each Monday evening from 4:00 to 5:00pm.

Canine T.E.A.M. Training

Do you have an interest in learning about how dogs communicate?  Have you always wanted to learn how to effectively train a dog?  Do you have a desire to help our dogs cope with the Shelter Environment?  Great… because we need YOU!
As part of the Canine T.E.A.M. (training, enrichment, and more) Program, you will have a huge impact on the dogs in our care.

Canine Charm School

Help our rowdy dogs learn their manners in Canine Charm School!  This class is for volunteers who have been through Canine T.E.A.M. Training and are ready to help our dogs become more adoptable.  During this class, our Behavior Department will go over positive based techniques to use while volunteering with our high-energy or rowdy dogs.  In this class volunteers will work directly with a dog who will benefit from participating.

Fostering Fearful Felines

Are you interested in helping some of our more timid kitties come out of their shell?  Join us for our Fostering Fearful Felines class and learn how you can help our cats learn to trust people!  During this class, we’ll go over foster care requirements, methods to socialize, and how to use feline body language to eliminate fearful interactions.  The material covered in this class is great for your work with fearful foster kitties and also any timid cats you may encounter day to day.
