Snowball with her puppies

A Snowball’s chance: How love melted fear

When Snowball arrived at our rescue, she was in bad shape: matted fur, timid, and fiercely protective of her newborn puppies. Her past had clearly been rough and she had every reason to be wary of the world.

But our team, with your support, was able to bring about incredible change for Snowball.

After an expert grooming and placement in a warm, loving foster home, her fear began to slowly melt away. Her first few days were tough; she would become scared and standoffish whenever anyone, but especially men, came close to her puppies. With the gentle guidance of her foster family, she adapted to the presence of other dogs, cats and children. Even her fear of men began to fade with consistent kindness and patience.

Her foster family gave her the gift of safety and time. In return, Snowball gave them her trust.

Soon, her perfect match appeared: an AHS donor family who gave her a new name, Millie, and a new life. One of our own fundraising team members helped make the connection!

They are so thankful to have found her, and to the foster family whose care transformed Snowball into Millie, a beloved pet and family member.

Snowball's adoption

“We are very, very happy to be together!! Millie has brought us so much joy. Thank you to the foster family for being so good with her. We can tell they did a great job.”

Her journey is a testament to resilience, compassion and giving every animal a chance. Without your support, Millie would not have been able to get her second chance.

Snowball’s story was a part of our 2025 September Match campaign. You can read more stories from the campaign, among others, in our Stories tag! And of course, you can always be a part of the mission and donate to support stories like these.

More to bark about

Souvenir the kitten shouldn't have survived. Found with a broken jaw healed out of place, his future was fragile. But thanks to expert medical and foster care, he not only survived—he thrived, eating with gusto before finding his perfect home.
