Asheville Humane Society Launches Capital Campaign for New Animal Adoption and Education Center
ASHEVILLE, NC June 23, 2006 Asheville Humane Society (AHS) announced the launch of a $2.5 million capital campaign, Homeward Bound, to fund a new Adoption and Education Center. The new facility will provide a healthy and humane space for unwanted animals, a family-friendly environment for adoption, and will save the lives of thousands of animals. Major gifts are being secured and a public phase begins this summer. More than $1.9 million has been raised, including 100 percent participation from Board. Construction of the facility will begin in Fall 2006.

Joe and Janice Brumit are co-chairs of the campaign. "Our hearts go out to the animals. While we were engaged with this project from the beginning, after taking a tour of the current facility there was no doubt…we must go forward with this project."

Actress and local resident, Andie MacDowell, heartily endorses the campaign, stating "Animals have made a huge difference in my life. They can't speak, but I can, and they deserve better."
The new 11,000 square foot Adoption and Education Center will provide a healthy, low-stress, family-friendly environment to house cats, dogs, and other animals that are ready for adoption. The design of the center will provide ample space, state-of-the-art noise and disease control, and stress-reducing animal housing. These improvements will greatly increase our adoption placements, saving the lives of countless animals. This center will also provide space and facilities for much needed education services that support the humane treatment of animals, and will be available for use by other community groups.
The Adoption and Education Center will be constructed on three acres of land at the intersection of Brevard Road (NC 191) and Pond Road, just south of the Farmer's Market, a centralized location with easy access to all interstate highways. The property has been generously donated to AHS by Deal Motor Cars of Asheville.
Replacement of the current facility, a former vehicle maintenance garage, is at least 20 years overdue. The facility is in dangerously declining condition due to a combination of problems such as termite damage, a leaking roof , water damage, and exposed electrical wiring. The building was not designed to serve as an animal services facility, and is inadequate to provide safe, humane care of animals or to meet staffing needs.
