Walk for the Animals

Asheville Humane Society's 14th annual walkathon, Walk for the Animals, will took place on Saturday, April 26, 2008 on the grounds of the Equestrian Center at the historic Biltmore Estate.  Registration began at 9am and the Walk kicked off at 11am.  Presented by Pet Supplies Plus and Classic Hits 96.5 WOXL, Walk for the Animals celebrates the animals in our lives.  Leading the parade was Host Dog, Hershey, and shelter dogs sporting their bright red "Adopt-Me" vests served as ambassadors for the other shelter animals.  Joining the four-legged team accompanied by their two-legged celebrity parents were WLOS anchor Tammy Watford, and Classic Hits 96.5 WOXL's Ken and Tammy.

Celebrating the bond between people and their pets, registered walkers sought people to sponsor them at a flat rate, then they and their animal companions gathered on the grounds of the Biltmore Estate Equestrian Center for a fun-filled morning including a 1.7 mile walk along the river near the lagoon on the Biltmore Estate, music, contests, entertainment, activities, and vendors, and finishing off with a Picnic with your Pet provided by Deer Park Restaurant.

Raising over $5,000, the top individual fundraisers were Joel and Debbie Berkowitz, winning the Grand Prize of having their dog, Hershey, serve as Host Pet for the 2009 Walk for the Animals.  The top team fundraiser was You Work, I'll Play, and a brick engraved with their team name will be placed in the new Adoption and Education Center.
