Hiking Hounds

Hiking Hounds allows both volunteers and shelter dogs to have fun in the beautiful outdoors! Besides getting fresh air with man’s best friend, the hiking club offers the following benefits:

  • Add an enriching activity to a dog’s stay at the shelter
  • Will expose dogs to new things and reinforce obedience and life skills
  • Increase adoptability by having more exposure to the public
  • Burn off the dog’s energy in a positive way, which will also increase adoptions
  • Boost staff and volunteer morale
  • Make it easier for staff to clean in the morning

Each month at least one hike/walk is offered. There is limited space; you must sign up for the hike by contacting: mixed_breed@hotmail.com. New hikers meet at 8:00am at the shelter on the scheduled day for a quick orientation. Hikers who have already attended the orientation can arrive at the shelter at 8:30am. Hikers will be matched up with an appropriate dog and will need to spend some time with the dog before departing. The dogs and hikers are loaded into vehicles and leave the shelter at 9:00am. Hikers and dogs return to the shelter by 12:00pm.

You do not need to be an official AHS volunteer to participate in the hikes.
