DRIVE Program Volunteer Information Session

5:30 - 6:30 PM 

Join us for this first of many information session for volunteers as we launch the DRIVE Shelter Program exclusively at Asheville Humane Society. The DRIVE initiative is designed to help current dog owners and potential adopters to better understand the modern dog. The DRIVE Shelter Program will help us provide specialized care for the dogs in our adoption center and help us facilitate good matches and lasting adoptions. As we roll out DRIVE at Asheville Humane Society we will be shifting to some new language, utilizing new crate cards and adapting our adoption process to better serve dogs in our care and our community. This information session is especially recommended for Front Desk Attendants, Canine Caretakers, Canine Ambassadors, On-site Adoption Promotion Assistants, Off-site Adoption Event Assistants and volunteers currently working with TARGET dogs and those taking DRIVE training classes. Urban Tails

Volunteer Orientation & Tour

Take the first step towards becoming a volunteer for the largest lifesaving animal welfare agency in Western North Carolina!  Fill out an application online and plan to attend this session to get started.  The orientation will explain types of volunteer work, requirements, and the rewards of joining the team at Asheville Humane Society!  Following the orientation, attendees will be given a tour of our beautiful and functional Adoption Center.  We welcome junior volunteers ages 10 and up!  For more information, contact us at volunteer@ashevillehumane.org.  Reservations required. 

 

Animal Body Language Class

Paws for a Cause

On August 10th the West Asheville tattoo parlor, Freaks & Geeks Tattoo Sideshow will once again be donating 100% of the day’s proceeds to Asheville Humane Society during Paws for the Cause. This marks the 6th year the crew from Freaks & Geeks has dedicated a day of inking to raise money and awareness for Asheville Humane Society. For eight hours, four artists will be tattooing from a selection of four pet-related designs priced at $40 each (cash only.)

If you enjoy structured dog training work with a group of people and an instructor, this is the class for you!  Topics for the Driver?s Ed classes will rotate each week and will include the all-important basic tasks our Adoption Center dogs need to learn and perfect, such as ?Sit,? ?Down,? ?Off,? and ?Touch.? We will also have classes for tricks and fun challenges!  You are welcome to sign up for just one session or for a series of classes, since we always have new dogs that need to learn.  Time will be given each week to work on the training topics and also to address specific behaviors with the individual dogs in the class.  Class size is very limited, so be sure to sign up early!  Prerequisites include: Pooch Essentials Class and Basic Skills Canine Class.  If you have questions or want more information about this exciting new opportunity, e-mail us at volunteer@ashevillehumane.org.

Join the team responsible for the basic care of our Adoption Center cats and kittens!  Participants in this class will learn how to feed the cats, clean all the kitty areas, and other aspects of basic care.  At the end of the class, you will also learn fun ways to enrich the shelter experience for our feline friends, including teaching them tricks!  Prerequisites: Feline Fundamentals Class. Canine Caretaker Class

Join the team responsible for the basic care of our Adoption Center dogs and puppies!  Participants in this class will learn how to feed the dogs, clean all the canine areas, perform outdoor rotations, deliver Kongs, and more.  Once this class is completed, volunteers can take over the daily responsibilities of dog care in the Adoption Center, enabling staff to spend even more time with potential adopters and making the matches that save lives!  Prerequisites: Pooch Essentials Class.  Sign up using the Volunteer Information Center online or e-mail volunteer@ashevillehumane.org with any questions.
