Happy Tails
To all the good people at the Humane Society,
Zoe is now KAYLEE and we are all very happy. Kaylee is getting along with everyone including our cat. She is great on a leash and she is excellent with a verbal leash. She turns on a dime when called either with her new name or "come". She is very polite and already knows where to lie down while we are eating. Kaylee never begs and never shows interest in the trash. She is completely house broken, understands a gentle "no", and will exit the kitchen/eating area with "go lie down". It has been less then three days since joined us!
Kaylee is a bit clingy, but shows all the signs of being a confident girl. On our private trail, she springs ahead with great excitement, but never wants to be out of sight (and of course I don't want her to be out of sight either). She comes all the way back when called.
She is perfect in the car, sleeps on her doggie bed all night, knows what's a toy and what's not, eats well, plays with abandon, and snuggles like a pro. And our 12 year old cat actually likes her!
We know that it will take some time to understand Kaylee's behavior in various, less controlled environments. But we would never have imagined any dog fitting in to a new situation so easily.
How did we got so lucky?
Thank you for taking such good care of her until we found her.

Zoey

On November 13, 2003 I adopted a beautiful stray named Zena (renamed Zoey) from AHS. In January of 2004, Zoey and I packed up and moved to Tampa Bay, FL. Zoey has become the best dog anyone could ever ask for. She is my best friend, my daughter, my confidant, my exercise buddy, my snuggle bunny… Without her, I don’t know where I would be. Words can not describe our bond to each other. Six years later, everyday with her is still a precious gift. Thank you all SO MUCH for helping me find her. I can not thank you enough!! Keep the faith, you are saving lives! Sometimes, both the human and animal. :)
Sincerely,
Zoey and Jessica Blalock
Beau
Twelve years ago I adopted Bella, a corgi mix, in New York City and she has been the most wonderful companion you could possibly ask for. A few weeks ago Beau, a terrier mix, joined our family and quickly became Bella's best friend. He is so loving, playful and smart! Please enjoy these pictures and thank you for bringing more joy into our home!

Joey

On October 2, we adopted the best little guy on the planet from your shelter. You guys had named him Gravy, but he was soon christened Joey, the little ‘brother’ my son has been begging for. Joey is amazingly smart and very sweet. He has become the unofficial mascot of my son’s soccer team, and a regular at PetSmart and Lowes. He’s so very social and just sits for folks to pet him.
The most amazing thing happened today! We ran into his BROTHER!
Grits, renamed Dray, is a staff member at the Frugal Backpacker in Fletcher. Of course, now I understand why you labeled him a Shepherd mix. Completely different coloring than his bro… I sure hope Gumbo found a good home also! (note to reader - Gumbo was adopted!)
Thank you guys for taking such good care of our friends until we find them. I’m so glad that Joey is part of our family!

Ellie

Several years we adopted Zelda - we renamed her Ellie. My wife Grace had a dream about Ellie (Zelda) and described her to me. Several months later she showed up on your adoption page! We've decided she's a Whippet/Border Collie mix. I doubt if she could have ended up in a better home.
Enjoy the photos.

Roxy

Here are some pictures of Roxanne; we call her Roxy for short. My family and I wanted to express our thanks to the Lily-Grace Fund, and the Asheville Humane Society for saving her life. We already had a three year old male Rottweiler Mix, named Roman who we adopted from Catawba County as a very young puppy, and were a little anxious about adding another adult Rottweiler to the mix.
We took Ro
man down to the adoption center to meet Roxy and they seemed to get along just fine. Once we got Roxy home her personality really started to shine. She is the sweetest dog I have ever met; an absolute lover! Roxy makes friends wherever she goes; she loves to meet new people and other dogs. She is perfectly content as long as she is near her people. She follows us from room to room just waiting to be petted. Roxy seems truly grateful to have a forever home. Thank you for all of the effort that you put into saving her life. We love having Roxy in our home, and are thankful to have the opportunity to give her the life she deserves.

kobi
I adopted Kobi (formerly named 'Zeus') from you on 2/7/09, and he has obviously made himself very comfortable with his new buddy Kip. (Kobi is the Doberman with the cropped ears and blue or leather collar). They spend most of their day either wrestling, chasing each other through the yard or sleeping, usually on top of each other. They're very popular with my patients, since they come to work with me every day.
He's a fabulous dog, and I really appreciate Beth and all the great folks there who got me hooked up with Kobi!
Thanks!
Sharon
skittles

This is Skittles and his family. Skittles was available for adoption for many months before he found his forever home - that was years ago. Skittles recently stopped by the shelter to say hello to the AHS staff and to show off his family. When Skittles was first adopted, the young man in the picture was half as tall and in the 3rd grade. Skittles and the young man have grown up together and recently ran a 5k race together... a happy tail for sure!
blue

Meet Blue, formerly Autumn, with her new mommy. Blue was adopted in August of last year and recently dropped by the shelter for a visit. Lately we've been having quite a few alumni visitors and we love it!
Isn't Blue adorable? Look at that happy-doggy smile on her face!
Paige
I adopted Paige, an 8 yr old Shepherd/Collie mix, and we are quite happy together. We got home from the shelter and took a nice walk up the mountain behind my house and she seems quite pleased. She has a huge yard to run around in and she ate her entire dinner. The staff had said she hadn't been eating well. I moistened her dry Nutro and it was a hit! She is curled up in her crate and is practically snoring. Thanks for leading me directly to her upon hearing that I was interested in a mature dog. Please tell Emily and company that Paige is a perfect fit for me.
Thanks again and best wishes,
Pamela Gerth
cookie
A few months ago, we adopted a Shephed/Husky mix puppy name Habernero. Habernero, now Cookie, has turned out to be a perfect family pet. He has the cutest face, a great personality and is very well-behaved. We couldn't have found a better pet. Thank you for all that you do for animals at the Humane Society. Please find the attached picture of our best friend, Cookie.

Friend and Pal

Last fall was tough. I had to put my dear dog to sleep and two months later my 15 year old cat died. After a few days of coming home to an empty house, I found myself on the Humane Society website looking at the kitties. All were beautiful, but one really caught my eye. The next day I went to the Lee's Creek shelter. As I walked around looking to see if my new "friend" was available, I saw a woman holding him. After a few minutes, I went up to her and said, "Are thinking of adopting this little guy? If not, please let me know." She looked me in the eye and said, "You know, I think you and he belong together!" I was taken aback when she simply handed him to me. A few minutes later she sat next to me with another little "Tuxedo" kitten. The two of them began playing and the woman said, "You have to take both of them, you know". And so I did!
I've named them "Friend" and "Pal" and they are devoted to each other. They meet me at the door every evening and we have our rituals of dinner, petting, purring and playing. They are healthy and happy and the loves of my life. Thanks to all of the wonderful folks at the Humane Society for the caring work they do.
Consider adopting your own Friend or Pal today!
Arenda
Sam and Pippin
This is now Pip, formerly Jeezy, whom we adopted in December of last year. He is doing great....big brother Sam is a constant playmate and companion. He also has acclimated very well to a household of four kids! We even managed to surprise the kids Christmas morning with this puppy from Santa! I think my 6-yr-old said it best when he told us "Pip is more fun than a playground!"
They are affectionate buddies and we are so glad to have Pippin in our home. The crate training has been remarkable and very reassuring for when we need to leave the house. Thankfully as a stay-at-home mom, I am with these boys all the time. They are getting plenty of exercise and playtime!
Thank you for sending "Jeezy" our way......he is a true "boy's dog" and we are one happy family!!
Sincerely,
Erin Rogers for Chris, Lilly, Jackson, Nash, Lincoln & Sam
homer
Homeboy, aka Homer, is settling in with the "Big" guys. Homer would like to be the boss of Henry - and Henry is true to the temperament of Mastiffs - a "Gentle Giant"!

Thank you, Pauline Mullikin
obi
We adopted Obi at the end of October from AHS, thanks to a tip from a friend that a black Cocker Spaniel had shown up at the Shelter. Obi has become a beloved member of our family. He is a lovable, sweet-natured, funny boy.
We recently added some chickens to our family, and I made a little video (see above). It's called "When Obi Met Santos and Edie".
Also, Obi is featured in some pictures on our website www.ashevillebouchon.com , and I've linked AHS on our "Links we Like" page.
Thanks for the good work you do!

tasha

I wanted to send you an update on Tasha. She is doing great!!! We love her so much. She has done a lot in 10 days... she has been to Skylar's school and interacted with the kids. She was wonderful. At school, all of the kids were very respectful and she loved it. She also went to a friend's house, where they have two 3-year-old boys and 2 dogs. She did really well there too.
Tasha seems to like Skylar's barbies. She will sneek up into her playroom and come out with one. I think it is funny, Skylar does not!
I have been walking her on my days off. I think I’m going to take her for some leash training. We will both have more fun that way.
She really is perfect. She is a couch potato when we are, and she plays when we take
her out or throw her ball in the house.
Thank you for saving Tasha’s life :-)
Cindee and Skylar
Note: Two rescue organizations worked together to save Tasha's life; AHS and Blue Ridge Boxer Rescue
george
Last fall, while volunteering at the shelter, I fell in love with the fuzziest, laziest, sweetest fur ball I had ever met. He was big and fluffy, and if it's true that some cats are sweet and some cats are smart, then this one was solidly in the sweet category. He was wonderful. The only problem was that we already had three cats and a dog;
I really didn't think I'd be able to talk my husband into another pet. But I dragged him to the shelter anyway, to meet "Cairo." My husband held him for a little while, and that was that - we brought him home that day, renamed him George, and wondered how our other cats would feel about him.
The pictures say it all - Lila, a Siamese mix we adopted the year before, is head over heels in love with him. Our dog even shares his food bowl with him (which hasn't helped George's waistline any!) Best of all, George reminds me of an animatronic teddy bear. I literally wake up with him either on my chest or curled around my head every morning, and any time I take a nap. At first I thought he was trying to smother me, but I realized he's just desperate to snuggle. My other cats can be a little aloof, but not George - his affection knows no bounds. And in turn, our whole household just loves him. Adopting George was one of the best decisions we've ever made - he's awesome.

Abby
It is probably not many cats who earn their keep, but Abby is one kitty who definitely pays for her own kibble!
Chris and Nina Young, owners of Office Environments, missed their two Labradors, sisters who passed away after long and happy lives. Their sons, Kevin and Brian, decided that what their parents needed was a pet. Their Christmas present to their mother was a gift certificate from Asheville Humane Society.
Nina decided to choose a cat from the shelter. "But none of them really clicked," remembered Nina. "I was ready to leave and come back on another day, when one of the volunteers said I had missed the sweetest kitten they had. She was sleeping in the lowest corner cage. If that volunteer had not been there I would have missed her."
And so, Moonflower, soon renamed Abby, spent that night and all the others after it, sleeping by Nina's pillow and going to work each day with her new owners. "She hid the first few days in the store, but soon found her spot on my desk under the lamp," says Nina.
Now she greets customers and visits the other employees (all of whom have kitty treats in their desk drawers). Not long after she began going to work, a customer decided on a large order, saying, "Any company who has a cat roaming the office must be good people."
Thanks to our volunteers, who helped make this match, and thanks to the entire Young family who gave Abby a second chance.
Nina, Chris, Kevin and Brian Young
Tinx
I adopted a dog from you guys about two years ago. He was known as Einstein when I adopted him; his new name is Tinx. He is a shitzu chihuahua mix. He has been nothing short of an amazing dog! We love him so much. He loves to walk in the park and hike on the parkway. He loves to ride in the car, but he's not too crazy about the doggy seatbelt we make him wear! He is such a smart dog. We've trained him to come, sit and lay down. He is our world. Thank you for your time and a huge thanks to your facility for bringing me my little angel! I've also attached a photo, he loves to snuggle under the blankets with me! Thanks again!
Sincerely,
Heather Price
