Horses in Need

     While most people know that there is a huge overpopulation of unwanted dogs and cats in this country, our communities are also full of unwanted horses.  With last summer’s drought, hay prices remain extremely high, and this has compounded the number of unwanted equines in this region. 

     Asheville Humane Society, Buncombe County Animal Control, and Hope for Horses are working in collaboration to help these animals.  Hope for Horses is a volunteer, non-profit organization that helps rescue, house, and rehabilitate neglected and unwanted equines in our community.  They assist in housing horses acquired by Buncombe County’s Animal Control and Asheville Humane Society.  The phone lines are flooded with calls of neglected and starving horses, and “free to good home” ads are commonplace in local publications.

     No individual agency can handle this problem alone.  Experienced horse lovers are desperately needed to assist these deserving animals by:

•    temporarily boarding
•    transporting
•    permanently adopting

     If you have experience, safe hauling equipment and an appropriate environment to temporarily house or permanently adopt a horse, please contact Kelly Hawkins, AHS Director of Operations, at 253-6807.

Horses available for adoption through AHS:

Arabian mare.

She has no vices or issues, although she is a

starvation case who is expected to be completely

recovered in the next month or so.

She is very affectionate and inquisitive and was

ridden by children in her former life.

We would love to see Corky and Ellie go to the

same home, however a safe home is the utlimate

goal for both mares.

Ellie                                                                           

Ellie is a 19-year-old retired registered Arabian mare.

She is a former brood mare who is recovering from
serious nutritional neglect but will be 100% healthy
within a month or so.

We would love to see Ellie placed with her buddy
Corky, but a good, safe home is the ultimate goal for
this sweet mare.
