shelly.jpgThe Asheville area is fortunate to have quite a few groups working on behalf of animals. And it’s even more fortunate that the groups work well together to serve the animals in our community, helping to create a safety net for the homeless animals who come to us in need. The truth is, there is simply no way Asheville Humane Society could do what we do without the support of these groups. And now more than ever, our friends and partners are important to us, helping to expand our adoption options as we await the construction of a new Adoption and Education Center .

As anyone who has visited the shelter and adoption center knows, space for the animals is limited. One of the ways we have been able to improve our adoption rates is to lean into our network of partners. We transfer a large number of dogs each year to specific breed rescue groups. We also work closely with Animal Compassion Network (ACN), which is able to accept some of our adoptable animals. Some, like Cody on the previous page, have special needs, and others, like a sweet Rat Terrier named Lovey, came in when the shelter was full and just need a chance. The Mimi Paige Foundation helps get important humane education messages to the community through radio, TV and print ads, stressing the importance of spaying and neutering to help reduce the unwanted pet population. Humane Alliance Spay/Neuter Clinic is an incredible asset to our region, providing low-cost spay/neuter services to our animals and to the general public.

As I have said before, it really does take all of us, each doing our part. Space at the shelter is limited, and foster homes, whether through ACN or through our own foster program, help increase the numbers of animals we are able to make available for adoption. Please consider becoming a part of one of these vital programs that help save the lives of wonderfully amazing animals. And please contact us about getting involved with our foster program. Together we CAN make a difference.

For the Animals,
